| | | Creator: | Cochran, William Cox | | | Dates: | 1940 | | | Abstract: | Jacob Dolson Cox was a Union Army general and politician from Ohio. During the American Civil War, Cox headed the Department of the Kanawha, commanded the IX Corps of the Army of Virginia, and in 1863, assumed command of the District of Ohio and of the 3rd Division, XXIII Corps. After the war, he was Governor of Ohio (1866-1867) and was President Grant's Secretary of the Interior (1869-1870). He was also president of the Wabash Railroad and was elected to Congress in 1876. He authored Military Reminiscences of the Civil War (1900). The collection consists of a bound, ribbon copy of William Cox Cochran's(1846-1936) unfinished biography of his stepfather, Major General Jacob Dolson Cox (1828-1900). | | | Creator: | Cumings, Henry Harrison | | | Dates: | 1817-1882 | | | Abstract: | Henry Harrison Cumings (1840-1913) was born in Illinois. With his family, he moved in 1825 to Unionville, Lake County, Ohio. In 1852, he moved to North Madison, Lake County, Ohio. Cumings attended various schools, including the Madison Seminary and the Grand River Institute at Austinburgh. He later enrolled at Oberlin College, graduating in 1862. He then enlisted in the 105th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War, receiving a commission as a 1st Lieutenant of Company D. In 1864, he was promoted to the rank of Captain of Company A, later transferring to Company K. During the war, Cumings and the 105th Regiment saw action in the battles of Perryville, Kentucky (1862); Milton, Tennessee (1863); Hoover's Gap, Tennessee (1863); Murfreesboro, Tennessee (1863); Lookout Mountain, Tennessee (1863); Missionary Ridge, Tennessee (1863); and Atlanta, Georgia (1864). After the war, Cumings settled at Tidioute, Warren County, Pennsylvania, where he lived for the remainder of his life. In 1867, he married Charlotte (Lottie) J. Sink. Cumings was active in various oil refining companies, and also served in local political and governmental posts. The collection consists of correspondence, supply orders, military records and publications, post-war business records, personal writings, newspaper clippings, speeches, and an autograph book. The collection pertains primarily to Henry Cumings' Civil War experiences, with detailed information referring to the 105th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and the post quartermaster department. Also included is material relating to Oberlin College during the early 1860s, letters from his wife, Lottie Sink Cumings, and personal information pertaining to Henry Cumings, his family and friends. | | | Creator: | Various | | | Dates: | 1761-1977 | | | Abstract: | William Pendleton Palmer (1861-1927) was the President of American Steel and Wire Company, a director of U.S. Steel Corporation, and President of the Western Reserve Historical Society (Cleveland, Ohio) from 1913-1927. Palmer had an intense interest in the American Civil War and acquired an extensive collection of manuscript material related to the war, the memories of that conflict, and slavery. This collection is one of several Palmer collections from the Civil War era owned by the Western Reserve Historical Society. The collection consists of dozens of different types of documents in three distinct categories: civilian, governmental, and military. The document types created by civilians are: academic records, autographs, bills of lading, bills of sale, biographical sketches, circulars, diaries, dissertations, envelopes, essays, financials, funeral records, invitations, letters, manifests, memoirs, minutes, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, petitions, plantation records, obituaries, poetry, postcards, prayers, reminiscences, resumes, rosters, scrapbooks, sermons, ship's papers, slave rolls, song lyrics, speaker's notes, speech texts, unpublished books, and yearbooks.
